The restaurant name, El Gorrion, stemmed from the band Los Gorriones de Sonora. Jorge Teran, the originator of the restaurant, second to the left, was an aspiring musician from Nogales, Sonora. Though being a musician was his passion, he realized it was not enough to provide for a family and began to sell tamales out of his home and out of a push cart.
Given the success he found in the food industry, he invested his money in a food truck back in the 1970's. Seeing the influence Mexican food had in the city of Tucson, he established a permanent facility in south Tucson where he has operated for more than 20 years.
Jorge also established a strong relationship with the company, Raytheon, and has served many of its employees for over 20 years.
